First common European adder this year
The fact that the spring is a couple of weeks early this year have made me start looking for snakes earlier than usual. Found this common European adder (Vipera berus) or Huggorm on mars 14.
In Sweden we only have three species of snakes, the common European adder is the only poison one. The zigzag pattern on the back is the easiest way to identify our adder. Another way is to look it into its eyes and see if the pupil is round or vertical. The adder has a vertical pupil. Below is a closeup of the eye. This is a photo taken a few years ago in April. This adder has changed skin and the eye is clean and clear.
